Optimization of furfural production from hemicellulose of citrullus colocynthis (melon) seed husk using response surface methodology (RSM)

Global population explosion has led to an increase in demand for chemicals and fuels. Consequently this is accompanied by energy security environmental challenges such as GHGs emissions. Hence, the need alternative sources of from greener cannot be overemphasized. Furfural was produced hemicellulose citrullus colocynthis (Melon) seed husk (MSH) which involves simultaneous steps acid catalyzed hydrolysis/dehydration (MSH). A response surface methodology (RSM) used furfural production optimization using MINITAB 17statistical software. Results obtained RSM were analyzed analysis variance (ANOVA). with optimum yield 75.03% achieved via degradation fraction MSH at optimized variable conditions Temperature (220 °C), Acid Concentration (10% H2SO4), Reaction Time (55 minutes). FT-IR spectrum showed absorption 1670cm-1 2800cm-1 indicating a conjugated carbonyl functional group aldehydic hydrogen. The result revealed that utilization may serve viable solution disposing agricultural wastes address problems associated fossil fuels when feedstock industries biofuels fine production.
